A monumental collection of analog tape recordings salvaged from the Music archives of KPFA-FM in Berkeley, California. Due to station management upheaval in the late 1990's, the future of these recordings was in question... Other Minds' Executive and Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian (also former KPFA Music Director) offered to take responsibility for the tape collection. The station then transferred ownership of the materials to Other Minds in 2000. OM began fundraising to preserve the recordings, has digitized over 3,000 hours of material. KPFA-FM had an international reputation for innovative new music programming. The collection (1949-1992) represents the ever expanding range of musical styles, from classical conservatories to the counter-cultural movements of the 60's. The voices of many now prominent American and European artists are captured in these unique recordings. Read more about the Pacifica Radio Network and KPFA's history. The original tape collection is now permanently housed at the Mc Henry Library’s Special Collections, University of California Santa Cruz.
