Description
A continuation of the recording of Tania León’s presentation followed by Annea Lockwood on August 15, 1989 in Telluride, Colorado during the 1989 Composer to Composer Festival.

León answers some questions from the other composers then they move on to talking about different forms of improvisation and its presence in various types of music. León also talks about her globalist perspective on music due to her upbringing and reconciliation with her culture through her experience composing. Charles Amirkhanian then runs through rehearsal logistics for the performances before introducing Annea Lockwood.

Lockwood begins by explaining the fact that in recent years (1989), she has moved from a very singular vision of installation work and environmental sound pieces to a much more diverse output. She then presents a song (The Visitor) from “Night and Fog” (1987) for Tom Buckner (baritone), JD Parran (Bari tone sax), and Thurman Barker (percussion).

She then presents an excerpt from “Nautilus” (also known as “Thousand Year Dreaming”) for ensemble which she says was created from an improvised processes of finding resonant frequencies in the room for each instrument and inspired by the cave paintings at Lascaux.

She talks about and presents her piece “Secret Life” for Jon Deak (bass) and Joëlle Leandre (bass). The version played features Jon Deak on bass and voice.

The last excerpt she plays is from “A Sound Map of the Hudson River” which was going to be presented as an installation over the upcoming weekend of public performances.
