Funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and distributed via satellite by NPR, the series “Impact: Innovative Music From the Pacific Coast” presents “a wide range of innovative West Coast composers and musicians with original recordings of live performances made at clubs and concert halls in San Francisco and Los Angeles, including on-stage interviews of the artists and discussions and demonstrations of their often unorthodox instrumentation.” Program No. 1 in the four part series, was initially broadcast on January 11, 1988 and featured performances and interviews with Daniel Lentz, Chris Brown, and members of the Repercussion Unit. The program begins with two works for female vocalist, MIDI keyboards, and percussion, processed, mixed, and modified live by the composer. The first work “wolf-KYRIE” is taken from Lentz’s “wolfMASS” and the second is “Time’s Trick.” Both compositions featured multi-tracked vocals and instruments, and are in the repetitive or minimal music style. These are followed by a work of purely electronic music, composed by Chris Brown and performed by Brown utilizing an assortment of analog and digital electronic instruments, some of which have been modified or invented by the composer. The program then concludes with four of the five members of Repercussion Unit, a percussion ensemble specializing in contemporary music, performing Larry Stein’s dynamic and engaging “Orfacape.”Genres
