From a recording made on November 22, 1971, Charles Amirkhanian talks with composers Richard Borovsky and Ivan Tcherepnin, about a concert that was to be given the next day at Stanford University. One of the works to be performed was Joseph Matthias Hauer’s “Atonale Musik “, the significance of which is described by Tcherepnin. Borovsky then discusses his work “Studies on a Cosmic Law” which was influenced by “The Law of Sevenfoldness” as described by the Armenian mystic and philosopher George Ivanovich Gurdjieff. The program continues with a brief description of the other scheduled works before it meanders into a larger conversation about Tcherepnin’s life growing up in a family of famous composers and pianists, as well as his opinions about the challenges of performing live electronic music, and the possible psychological effects of amplifying outside ambient sounds inside your homes. The warm personality and insightful intelligence of Tcherepnin, who died in 1998, is quite evident in this delightful interview.
