The 1987 New Music America Festival was held in Philadelphia during the first two weeks in October. Produced by the local ensemble Relâche, this 10 day extravaganza of adventurous musical programing featured over 20 concerts, lectures, and sound installations. A wide range of sonic delights were offered, ranging from 20th century classical works for instrumental ensemble, to examples of experimental electronic wizardry, to incomparable improvisational jazz extravaganza’s, all performed by a bevy of talented musicians and composers. The ninth concert of the Festival featured english composer/performer Fast Forward, whose heavily rhythmic soundscapes are created from a variety of metal and sonic objects. The Peter Zummo Orchestra perform four selections from Zummo’s suite, “Six Songs”; each part with its own mood and iconic element. The orchestra’s sublime combination of players include Arthur Russell, Mustafa Ahmed, Guy Klucevsek, Bill Ruyle, along with Zummo himself.
Notes from the concert program:
PULSE POINTS by Fast Forward
This is a work for mixed metal instruments. Copper pipes, steel drum and amplified shock absorber springs are used to cover the ground between ultimate control and chaos.
SELECTIONS FROM THE SUITE “SIX SONGS” by Peter Zummo
This version of the suite is performed with Tricia Brown’s dance piece, Lateral Pass and includes the following songs: Sci-Fi is an evocation; Slow Heart sets a pace; Song IV is based on alternating right and left hand gestures; Song VI is modal and harmonic.
This concert was held at the Painted Bride Art Center, on October 7, 1987, and generously provided to Other Minds by Joseph Franklin who directed the 1987 New Music America festival, and Werner Strobel who digitized the original tape recordings.
