Description
Gianna Abondolo & Linda Catlin Smith (l to r), consulting a score prior to their performance at the 14 Other Minds Festival at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco in March of 2009. Abondolo is holding up her cello and looking at Smith who is holding a score and looking slightly lost in thought. On March 6, 2009 the two of them presented Smith’s 1994 composition “Through the Low Hills” which is scored for cello and piano.

Abondolo is a graduate of Juilliard, a former member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and faculty member at Mills College in Oakland California. She has performed as a soloist and in many chamber ensembles, and is also skilled improviser and composer.

Born in 1957, Linda Catlin Smith is a composer, keyboard player, and educator. The recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, Smith has been active in producing concerts, giving lectures, teaching composition, and is a member of the performance collective URGE. Musically her works are often influenced by an appreciation for literature and the visual arts, and the simplicity of her instrumentation often belies an underlying emotional complexity.
